Mexico visa for Indians: who needs one and how to get in

Indian passport holders need a Mexican visa, unless they hold a valid visa or residence from the US, Canada, the UK, Japan or a Schengen country. Here is how both routes work, in plain English.

Do Indians need a visa for Mexico?

Yes. India is not on Mexico’s list of visa-free nationalities, so an Indian passport on its own is not enough to board a flight to Mexico. There is no visa on arrival and no electronic visa for Indian citizens.

But many Indians travel to Mexico without a Mexican visa, because Mexico accepts some other countries’ visas instead. If that applies to you, skip the embassy completely.

Visa-free entry with a US, UK, Canada, Japan or Schengen visa

According to the Mexican consulates, you do not need a Mexican visa for tourism or unpaid activities, for up to 180 days, if you have one of these:

  • A valid, unexpired visa of any type from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom or a Schengen country, stuck in your passport (for example a US B1/B2, H-1B, F-1 or L-1 visa)
  • Permanent residence in one of those countries (for example a US green card), with the card
  • An APEC Business Travel Card approved by Mexico
  • Your Indian passport must be valid for your whole stay in Mexico.
  • Carry the passport that has the visa in it. A visa in an old passport causes trouble at check-in.
  • This exemption is only for visitors. It does not let you work for a Mexican employer.

How to apply for a Mexican visitor visa

If you do not qualify for the exemption, apply for a visitor visa without permission to work at the Embassy of Mexico in New Delhi, or at a Mexican consulate in the country where you live legally.

  1. Book an appointment. Appointments are online at citas.sre.gob.mx (also called MiConsulado). Every visa is handled in person and walk-ins are not accepted.
  2. Prepare your documents. Valid passport (original and copy), the visa application form, one recent passport photo, and proof that fits your case (see below).
  3. Show why you will return. The consulate asks for proof of one of these: steady income or savings (bank statements, salary slips), strong ties to India (job, business, property), or an invitation from a person or company in Mexico. The amounts required vary by consulate, so check with yours.
  4. Attend the interview and pay. The 2026 fee for a visitor visa is USD 56, paid at the consulate in local currency. If approved, the visa is put in your passport. Consulates say it can take from one to ten working days.

Requirements change, so always check the page of the embassy or consulate where you apply before your appointment.

At the airport in Mexico

A visa or exemption lets you travel, but the immigration officer decides whether you enter and for how many days. The consulates say this clearly: a visa “does not guarantee entry”. Officers can ask why you are visiting. Carry these in your hand luggage:

  • Return or onward ticket
  • Hotel booking, or the address and phone of the person you are visiting
  • Some proof of money for your stay (a bank statement or international card)
  • Invitation letter, if you are visiting family or a company
  • For business visits: a letter from your employer

Moving to Mexico for work or family

To live in Mexico for more than 180 days you need a temporary resident visa (from more than 180 days up to 4 years). In most cases you apply at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico, then exchange the visa for a residence card at the INM office within 30 days of arriving.

  • Job offer from a Mexican company: the employer must first ask INM (Mexico’s immigration institute) for your work authorisation. Then you get the visa at the consulate.
  • Remote work paid from abroad: a temporary resident visa can allow this, as long as your salary is paid from outside Mexico.
  • Family: spouses and children of residents or Mexican citizens have their own routes, and some can change status from inside Mexico.

Common mistakes

  • Flying on an expired US visa and being refused at check-in.
  • Booking a one-way ticket with no proof of onward travel.
  • Planning to work on a tourist entry. It is not allowed and can lead to removal.
  • Waiting until the last week before travel to book a consulate appointment.
  • Not checking the number of days given at immigration.
